MOTEL BOCK!
While E scouting for our 2023 Kansas trip, I found a small public lake that looked like it could hold mature deer. There was a small patch of timber, surrounded by tall CRP grass behind the lake levee. It was close to the highway and our motel. I knew it was possibly overlooked and that I could easily monitor the property throughout the week.
A quick peak in the edge of the timber from the parking lot, on day 1 of the trip, confirmed there were bucks using it. Those rubs and scrapes convinced me it was worth the last hour of daylight.
I saw 2 nice bucks while glassing it that first evening of the trip. Day 2 produced an exciting all day hunt, with a close call on a giant 8. On the following morning, I shot this buck 30 minutes after daylight, 300 yards from the pin I dropped a month earlier.
SHIT HOLE CATTLE FIELD BUMP N DUMP
On the 3rd day of our 2016 hunt, we found a particularly shitty looking piece of property on the map. We figured it would be a nice place for mature bucks to avoid people. Our first step on the property confirmed it was a total piece of shit, cattle everywhere.
While approaching a nice bedding point on the creek, we busted 2 nice bucks out of their beds. We backed out and studied the map, identifying another likely bedding location in the direction they ran.
The following evening, we set up on both sides of the bedding point, with just off wind for both of us. 45 minutes before dark, I hear Warren yell a primal victory tune “DOUBLE LUNG. KANSAS BOCK!!”.
The buck had stood up out of his bed less than 75 yards away from Warren, 6’ up in his tree saddle, and walked right under him on his way to a private corn field.
